Recycle Hawai‘i, a nonprofit educational organization, is celebrating 25 years of service and education to Hawaii Island communities about recycling and waste reduction activities for a more environmentally sustainable future.
As part of its educational outreach, Recycle Hawai‘i is offering its popular Backyard Composting workshops with sessions from 10 a.m.-noon March 25 at Keaau Recycling &Reuse Center; April 1 at the West Hawaii Civic Center and May 6 at Hawai‘i Green Earth Farm in Waimea.
The workshop covers basic composting principles and techniques ideal for beginners and those wanting a refresher. Information about worm composting and bokashi methods also is included.
More than 30 percent of our island’s trash is yard waste and kitchen scraps. The most simple and cost-effective method for recycling green waste and food waste is to compost these natural resources.
Composting at your home can divert up to 54 percent of household waste from the landfill and return nutrients into garden gold for growing healthy plants and food.
Register in advance by contacting Marsha Hee at 985-8725, 969-2012 or educationdirector@recyclehawaii.org. Information about workshop instructors and other RH services is available at www.recyclehawaii.org.
